Entering the French market – what German companies need to know

France remains German companies’ most important partner in the European Union. German businesses have branch offices or subsidiaries in France, and do M&A and other deals there. Yet despite the proximity, the legal conditions and mentalities of the two countries remain different. Treating the differences with sensitivity is a challenge to German businesses.

Key points in brief

  • The cultural differences between France and Germany shape the nature of cooperation. In France, language plays a special role. We work bilingually and some of our colleagues are French.
  • Tax and the law are different, particularly concerning deals, M&A and other transactions. We work with experienced corporate lawyers.
  • Employment law, health and safety, working times, salary structures, unions and works councils have high priority in France. Our Grant Thornton network includes French partners in employment law.
  • EU directives and rules often only give the appearance of providing security when doing business in France. We are familiar with the typical local differences.

France – an important player in the EU

As Germany’s neighbour, France often faces the same problems as we do in this country. Membership of the EU and (the apparent at least) cultural proximity are good reasons for becoming involved in France, in the form of deals, M&A, founding companies or setting up subsidiaries. A high level of attention is required, however, particularly in the areas of tax and law.

Challenges and solutions

Due to the EU-regulated environment, the challenges of maintaining business relations with France are not obvious. They exist none the less – including in the legal conditions. What’s more, they are present in intercultural aspects because a lack of understanding often prevails. This then particularly causes problems a long time after you stopped expecting them. We are a member firm of Grant Thornton International Ltd – we work with experts within the country to be able to understand intercultural differences better and to eliminate problems.

We’re there when you need us and provide advisory in the following areas:

  • All tax and auditing issues.
